100 years Sci Club Marzotto of our partner community Valdagno
The Sci Club Marzotto of our (Prien) partner community Valdagno celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 5, 2025 in the festival hall (historic building). Letter to the festival is attached, translation into German by DeepL.
The event was a reception, accompanied by a lecture and a large exhibition on the history with many exhibits in the foyer.
The Vice President of the FISI (Italian Ski Federation), President of the Olympic Organizing Committee for Cortina 2026 Stefano Longo and the President of the Italian Ski Instructors Association (himself a member of Sci Club Marzotto) Luigi Borgo spoke in honour of the Sci Club, with an engaging history of Skiing from origin.
The friendship with the skiers in Prien am Chiemsee was honored in the first place and I (Martin Blum) thanked for the cordial connection in recent times.
It is remarkable that the Sci Club – like Prien – stands out despite the “small” village of Valdagno. As skiing in Italy is a less federal system than in Germany/ Bavaria/ in the Gau, it is easier to make comparisons with all ski clubs in Italy and the competition is greater and stronger.
At national championships, Sci Club Marzotto has always achieved top places in the team rankings, coming second best of all Italian (85) clubs.
At the moment, the seniors in particular are incredibly strong and well represented. Several very old members (I wouldn’t be surprised if they are in their mid or late 80s) have dominated the annual national championships for almost decades. This makes the ski club “old”, but this is due to the strength (!) of the seniors.
According to my observations, nordic sports are hardly represented (I don’t know of any nordic facilities nearby), but there is a lot of experience and success in grass ski races and their organization.
The Sci Club emerged from the local Alpine Club (CAI), which grew out of a US Pasubio sports group. US Pasubio seems to have emerged from the local mountain troops in the post-war years of the First World War (Pasubio was a heavily contested mountain area with many monuments and a famous fortress high up in the peaks). This is also how the activities of the Sci Club Marzotto developed on a rifugio (mountain hut) that Valdagno created southwest of the Pasubio in the “small Dolomites”. Decades of Inverno races and specially built transportation facilities (sledge lifts) were the start of the skiing activities, in Recoaro 1000 Conch.
Valdagno itself has a similar location to Prien, it lies at the entrance to the mountains (Valle of the river Agno), like us at the foothills of the Alps. The name Marzotto comes from the Marzotto weaving mill, which was a huge employer in Valdagno for the region. Marzotto is still a textile manufacturer (group) to which Hugo Boss and Valentino also belonged in near past.
In addition to continuously organizing national championships (especially for older age groups), the Sci Club Marzotto organizes children’s training in the nearest ski resorts in collaboration with aother Ski Club and also has to contend with weak winters and consequent cancellations.
There are numerous small but very stable connections to Prien and Germany among the members. Among others, the German Thomas Klaudatos married the daughter of the first president and is always ready to help with explanations and translations when we are in contact.
The association is managed in a very warm, innovative, personal and professional manner by Flaviano Pelà, with a close-knit team of Collaborators and has been for decades. In 2012, Flaviano brought a whole bus full of members from Valdagno to Prien, where we spent a weekend together in Kitzbühel and Leogang under President Richard Fricke and with great help from Hans Wallner and Manfred Holler. The weather was kind to us, it had snowed well beforehand. The participants remember this experience very fondly and this year, 13 years later, they all told me the same thing.
I can only recommend continuing to foster this relationship and initiating joint activities for all age groups.

100 Jahre SCI Club Marzotto unserer Partnergemeinde Valdagno
Der Sci Club Marzotto unserer (Priener) Partnergemeinde Valdagno feierte am 5.4.2025 in der Festhalle (historisches Gebäude) sein 100-jähriges Bestehen. Festschrift zur Geschichte anbei, Übersetzung in Deutsch erfolgte durch DeepL. Die Veranstaltung war ein Empfang, begleitet durch Vortrag und einer großen Ausstellung zur Geschichte mit vielen Exponaten im Foyer. Zur Ehrung des Sci Club sprachen Vizepräsedent der FISI (Italienscher Skiverband), Präsident des olympischen Organisationskomitees für Cortina 2026 Stefano Longo und der Präsident des italienischen Skilehrerverbandes Luigi Borgo (selbst Mitglied des Sci Club Marzotto). Die Freundschaft zu den Skifahrern in Prien am Chiemsee wurde an erster Stelle geehrt und ich (Martin Blum) bedankte mich für die herzliche Verbindung in neuerer Zeit. Bemerkenswert ist, dass der Sci Club – ähnlich wie Prien – trotz des „kleinen“ Ortes Valdagno heraussticht. Da die Organisation des Skiverbandes in Italien ein weniger föderales System als in Deutschland/ Bayern/ im Gau ist, ist der Vergleich zu allen Ski Clubs in Italien leichter zu ziehen bzw. die Konkurrenz größer und stärker. Auf nationalen Meisterschaften errang der Sci Club Marzotto in der Teamwertung stets vordere Plätze, bestens der zweite Platz unter allen italienischen (85) Vereinen. Derzeit sind vor allem die Senioren unglaublich stark und viel vertreten. Mehrere sehr betagte Mitglieder (ich würde mich nicht wundern, wenn diese Mitte oder Ende der 80er Jahre sind), dominieren die jährlichen Nationalmeisterschaften seit fast schon Jahrzehnten. Damit ist der Ski Club zwar „alt“, jedoch ist dies auf die Stärke (!) der Senioren zurückzuführen. Meiner Beobachtung nach ist nordisch kaum vertreten (ich wüsste auch keine nordischen Anlagen in der Nähe), dafür gibt es viel Erfahrung und Erfolg bei Grasskirennen und deren Ausrichtung.
Hervorgegangen ist Der Sci Club aus dem örtlichen Alpenverein (CAI), der aus einer Sportgruppe US Pasubio entstanden ist. US Pasubio scheint in den Nachkriegsjahren des ersten Weltkrieges (Pasubio war ein stark umkämpftes Berggebiet mit jetzt noch vielen Denkmälern und einer berühmten Festungsanlage hoch in den Gipfeln) aus den Gebirgsjägern der Gegend hervorgegangen zu sein. So entwickelten sich auch die Aktivitäten des Sci Club Marzotto auf einem Rifugio (Berghütte), die Valdagno südwestlich des Pasubio in den „kleinen Dolomiten“ erschaffen hat. Jahrzehntlange Inferno-Rennen und eigens gebaute Beförderungsanlagen (Schlitten-Lifte) waren der Start der Skiaktivitäten in Recoaro 1000. Valdagno selbst hat eine ähnliche Lage wie Prien, es liegt am Eingang der Berge (Valle des Flusses Agno), wie wir am Ausgang der Voralpen. Der Name Marzotto kommt von der Weberei Marzotto, die ein riesiger Arbeitgeber in Valdagno für die Region war. Marzotto ist immer noch ein Textilfabrikant (Gruppe) zu der auch Hugo Boss und Valentino gehörten.
Neben kontinuierlicher Ausrichtung von nationalen Meisterschaften (vor allem für ältere Altersgruppen) veranstaltet der Sci Club Marzotto Kinderausbildung in den nächstgelegenen Skigebieten und hat dabei auch mit schwachen Wintern und folglich einigen Absagen zu kämpfen.
Unter den Mitgliedern gibt es zahlreiche kleine, aber sehr beständige Verbindungen nach Prien und Deutschland. Unter anderem hat der Deutsche Thomas Klaudatos die Tochter des ersten Präsidenten geehelicht und steht bei Kontakten zu uns stets als Hilfe mit Erklärung und Übersetzung sehr hilfreich bereit.
Der Verein wird schon seit Jahrzehnten sehr herzlich, innovativ, persönlich und professionell von Flaviano Pelà und vielen befreundeten Unterstützern geleitet. Flaviano hat 2012 einen ganzen Bus mit Mitgliedern aus Valdagno nach Prien gebracht, wo wir unter Präsident Richard Fricke und mit großer Hilfe von Hans Wallner und Manfred Holler ein gemeinsames Wochenende in Kitzbühel und Leogang verbrachten. Das Wetter war uns hold, es hatte gut geschneit zuvor. An dieses Erlebnis erinnern sich die Teilnehmer sehr gerne und dies hatten sie mir dieses Jahr, 13 Jahre später, auch alle freudig widergespiegelt.
Ich kann nur empfehlen, diese Beziehung weiter zu fördern und immer wieder gemeinsames in allen Altersgruppen zu initiieren.
